Our Approach to Service Learning
The South Middle School Campus has participated annually for the last number of years in the Terry Fox Run and Walk to raise funds for cancer research.
Over the many years that we have engaged students in the service learning process, we have been able to have a positive impact on a number of organizations and individuals within both our community and globally. For example, Grade Six classes have organized a "Rakefest" annually for the citizens (many of whom are elderly) in the community of Acadia around our school. Students distribute flyers and over a period of two weeks in the late fall, go out into the surrounding area and rake and bag leaves for our neighbors.
We have had some of our classes create special events for our Grade 3 and 4 students at our south elementary campuses, as well as two separate organizations which specialize in the care of autistic children.
In the past students have organized food drives and raised money to support organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society, Mustard Seed, Veteran's Food Bank and much more.
